"...these are all truly classic Verve titles that you simply don't want to miss...most importantly, the sound of these reissues is nothing short of astounding. Particularly the early Billie and Ella mono records are incredible treasures of sonic beauty. I'd definitely ask Santa for the whole set, or, if you want to cherry pick, the most classic titles. Whatever you decide, you owe yourself at least a half dozen!" Winner of a 2012 Positive Feedback Online Writers' Choice Award - Danny Kaey, Positive Feedback Online, November/December 2011

One of the giants of the alto saxophone, Johnny Hodges was perhaps the most important soloist and sideman in Duke Ellington's orchestra from 1928 up to Hodges' death in 1970. The self-taught player made many solo forays during his long career - one of his '50s outfits included a young John Coltrane - but history remembers Hodges for his virtuosic sidemanship, particularly his sensitive rendering of ballads.

Originally released in 1958.

A really laid-back, deeply bluesy album of beautiful jazz melodies. The title is fitting for this top-notch album, Johnny Hodges' breathy, note-bending play on the alto sax perfectly complements his all-star orchestra with Ben Webster on tenor sax, Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Vic Dickerson on trombone, Billy Strayhorn on piano, Jim Woode on bass, and Sam Woodyard on drums (take a bow, folks, for this amazing line-up). These guys can play the most soulful and lyrical of blues, but are also capable of swinging it up a couple notches (check out side B). Nothing like these "old-timers" conjuring up some rainy-day, mist-filled night blues. A++ for art work, music, mood, musicianship, and record mastering. Get it before it's gone.

A standout audiophile recording!

I have many of the 45 reissues and this one made me take notice. This has become one of my showcase albums with excellent dynamics and silent backgrounds.

Another winner!
