Over the past decade, new talents such as Cassandra Wilson, Patricia Barber and Holly Cole have redefined the world of female jazz vocals. Cole's Temptation, a 1995 Blue Note release, is her musical tribute to the writings of Tom Waits. Besides being a superb audiophile recording (perfect in every production detail, from the rendering of Cole's amazing voice to the incredibly natural sound captured by producer Craig Street's team), this album has garnered kudos for her interpretation of Waits' unique compositions. Standouts include a catchy version of "Jersey Girl," which made it onto a number of radio playlists, and a rendition of "The Briar and the Rose," brilliantly augmented by the Canadian Brass. Also included are "Take Me Home," "Train Song," "Temptation," "Falling Down," Invitation to the Blues," "Frank's Theme," "Little Boy Blue," "I Don't Wanna Grow Up," "Tango 'til They're Sore," "The Heart of Saturday Night," "Soldier's Things," "I Want You" and "Good Old World."

I agree with the previous reviewer: noisy for the price

Music: 5/5 Tom Waits dark tunes covered by the sultry Holly Cole. Sonically a 4.5 due to some harshness coming through on various sustained S's but otherwise sound and rendition are impeccable.

Packaging: 5/5 Top notch! A whopping 8 discs on otherwise beautiful clear, single-sided 45 rpm slabs housed in a nice heavy duty red box with the original album sleeve inside along with plenty of notes about the album. Each record comes neatly packaged in a poly-lined rice paper sleeve and all of this is buffered by a square of bubble wrap. I can't imagine it getting better for the price.

Despite the high quality release, the vinyl itself is VERY noisy - even after cleaning with an ultrasonic system, a wet vac and hand washing with various solutions. Classic's disaster known as Clarity vinyl is the culprit and hamstrings what should have been a hallmark release. 3 stars overall because listening through the mess takes real effort, when quiet it is divine, otherwise it is RICE CRISPIES!

At a $100.00 price tag, I expected more. What I got from the 1st record was a loud hiss throughout the LP. Cleaning the LP on my VPI did not help. I know that some copies will be fine but as usual with Classic Records, you take your chance. Absolutely terrible quality control. I also bought Holly Cole "Don't Sleep in Bed" on Clarity Vinyl and it was full of pops and clicks ... what a shame. That pressing had such potential to be a winner. If you get a clean copy then you will be impressed with both titles but there is no reason why this company cannot be consistant with their pressings.
