An amalgamation of swampy blues, jazz and rock - all mixed and recorded in a sparse, bloomy and eerie sort of way. This recording is just so damn fine, so airy and warm. And the musician's aboard on this Dennis Hopper film are a who's who,  including Miles Davis, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, Roy Rodgers, Earl Palmer and Tim Drummond. This has long been a highly sought after and collectible record among audiophiles. A true demonstration disc.

Originally released in 1990.

Miles Davis, trumpet
Tim Drummond, bass
Bradford Ellis, keyboards
John Lee Hooker, guitar, vocals
Taj Mahal, guitar, vocals
Earl Palmer, drums
Roy Rodgers, slide guitar

The Hot Spot Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Hybrid SACD Stereo 2009. The soundtrack for a 1990 Dennis Hopper movie. I have not seen the movie. I stumbled on this SACD and purchased because it was SACD and the line up seemed incredible to me. Miles Davis (trumpet) Tim Drummond (bass) Bradford Ellis (keyboards) John Lee Hooker (guitar, vocals) Taj Mahal (guitar, vocals) Earl Palmer (drums) Roy Rodgers (slide guitar) John Lee Hooker on most the tracks, Miles Davis plays a haunting trumpet when he does play on 10 of 13 tracks. Performance: Is great. You know it is a movie soundtrack and therefore some tracks being either short or long makes sense with this knowledge. Good simple liner notes, by Dennis Hopper and good track musician listing. These 7 musicians together makes for powerful blues/jazz music. Stereo Sonics: Great right-left-sub separation, well balanced in the middle, no speaker overpowers the other. Clean and crisp. Great music for those stoned moments.

Outstanding!!

I first heard this on vinyl in the Reference Room at Acoustic Sounds in 2007 during my first visit to AS and the Crossroads Blues Festival. I was so completely taken with the music and the sound that I asked Chad Stelly where I could get a copy. He politely replied, "Good luck! Maybe on eBay?". Upon my return to Houston I did manage to find a copy in Sao Paulo, Brazil for a hefty price. I waited patiently for over 4 weeks only to have it arrived snapped in half. It took another 4-5 months before I found one in Italy, again at a hefty price. It arrived quicker and in one piece. While it cleaned up rather nicely and had that fabulous sound that I remembered, it in no manner compares to the job done on both the vinyl reissue and this SACD. Great job and thanks for bringing a real treasure back to life.

Sounds great...but.

I bought this because I really like the blues and reviews were good. A great recording sonically with a couple of mildly interesting sections but musically it is repetative and quite boring on the whole.

Where has this soundtrack been?

The soundtrack is from a 1990 movie. Never saw it and I never heard of it until now. But the music is great and the SACD has a lot of there, there. Blues by mostly JLH.
