When Peter Frampton left Humble Pie, the band he co-founded, the group replaced him with fireball guitarist Clem Clemson. And Humble Pie grew a whole lot more raucous, more freewheeling and downright greasy. Smokin', the first album with Clemson, is unquestionably their greatest with Steve Marriott's soulful wail totally unleashed. Smokin' yielded the group's most memorable anthem - "30 Days In The Hole." Cut by Kevin Gray at AcousTech Mastering with the most intense attention paid to every minute detail, this reissue is positively Smokin'!

"Smokin" Indeed

I've just heard this LP in a direct comparison to the very fine Analog Productions SACD, itself a godsend when I first heard it almost a year ago. This vinyl reissue is better (albeit only slightly) in nearly every way. Deep, well-articulated bass with that beautiful early-70s analog midrange, and with Marriot's vocals, you feel he's right there on the other side of the recording studio glass...the highs are natural and smooth - no artifical sizzle here. I own the Japanese SHM-CD version (itself no slouch) as well as the aforementioned SACD, and the vinyl just "smokes" both of them (sorry, it was just too obvious to pass up). Simply a great record done right in every way. Now how about 'Rock On' as an encore?

The last reviewer hit the nail on the head. The Filmore album is a classic and Classic Records reissue is the only way to go. On Smokin' Frampton is gone amd Clem Clempson is in and rocking just has hard. I saw these guys in concert about the time this album was released and it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. No fireworks, just great music. Analogue Productions has done this album justice and Acoustic Sounds has done their usual great job.

Ok, so I didn't really know this LP and was taking a bit of a punt. I do have and enjoy the "Rockin' The Fillmore" Dbl on Classic - so not too much of a reach, especially as Kevin Gray has got his hands on it. As I was listening I had a thought - which is, if this LP came out today it would probably be hailed as the LP of the year. Yet in the year it came out, its definately in the top 100 but certainly not the best. This sounds like rock music should sound, cranked up and grooving on the hard driving numbers and relaxed and intricate on the acoustic interludes. For me 1954 to 1979 was where it was at. I am not some luddite who only listens to old stuff but no current band are doing stuff that is as innovative or sounds as good as this does. The vinyl revival goes on and for me it is a dream come true!
