The year 1971 saw the release of some of the greatest pop/rock albums of all time. Imagine, Pearl, Sticky Fingers, Who's Next, Tupelo Honey, Surf's Up, Fragile, Led Zep's IV, Muswell Hillbillies, Tapestry, What's Going On? and both Madman Across The Water and Tumbleweed Connection are just some of the iconic titles that hit the stores that year. Add Aqualung and that's quite an output for a 12-month span. Generally considered the pinnacle of the band's recorded output, front-man Ian Anderson's songwriting was quickly evolving from British folk-blues roots and helping define prog-rock. While definitely pushing the envelope for the era in taking on the subjects of God and organized religion, it was guitarist Martin Barre who was establishing equal ground with Anderson's flute as an instrumental voice of the band. Songs such as "My God," "Hymn 43," "Locomotive Breath," "Cross-Eyed Mary," "Wind Up" and of course the title tune became FM radio staples and are in-demand concert favorites to this day. Cut from the original analog master tapes obtained from Ian Anderson on Classic's "all-tube" cutting system by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman mastering. Available on 45-RPM as a four-disc box set, pressed on Classic's Clarity 200-gram Super Vinyl Profile.

I don't have an original pressing but I have had several copies over the years. The MFSL was the contender for best sounding but the Classic Records version, from my ears anyway, has taken the lead.

Fantastic sound

Fantastic mastering job. The best sounding Aqualung ever. As usual on US pressings there are some surface noise - this is not a German or a Japanese pressing.

Yes......you CAN tell the difference...........

The recordings of Aqualung from it's first original pressing to the MFSL to the DCC pressing to the Classic's 33rpm recording have all been incredible. The difference is on this is the 45rpm mix.I don't think any recording of this classic masterpiece will EVER be topped by this one.If you have a good vinyl spinner you will be amazed at the midrange on this as well as the "blackness" background noise which is like being locked up inside a soundproof room in a recording studio. This just may be the BEST vinyl recording I have ever heard PERIOD! GREAT work done here by Classic and the textured cover of Aqualung and the 4 12 inch 45's in the red box are so cool.Yes....you can tell the difference...............................

Best possible Aqualung ever!!

Even exceeds Classic's earlier 33 rpm version, which is still killer stuff. An amazing remastering job and suberb pressing. A bargain at any price - get it while you can!
