Mendelssohn's Symphonies Nos. 4 and 5 were composed within a short period of time and the highly individual form of the movements are proof positive of the young genius' never-ending source of ideas. The sparkling first movement of the Fourth Symphony with its jubilant theme and the wild, thrilling Salterello finale bear witness to an exuberant zest for life, such as Mendelssohn must have experienced it on his visit to Italy.

Symphony No. 4, Op. 90 (Italian)
Symphony No. 5, Op. 107 (Reformation)

Outstanding Recording

This is one of a series of records Maazel made with the Berlin Philharmonic in the late '50's early '60's. The interpretations are rhythmic and exciting, the Berliners are perfect without the sheen Karajan would later instill, and they are among the best engineered early stereos from DG, fully comparable to RCA Living Stereo, but with better personnel.
