Amazing recording; but, first Turnabout release better

This is possibly the definitive recording of the Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances; nothing I've heard since I purchased the original Turnabout LP, 'way back in the '70's, comes close. For sheer impact, virtuosity and just plain power, this is a sleek, Shelby Cobra, 500hp edition that is unbeatable.

Unfortuantly, this re-issue just doesn't quite live up to expectations. The original Turnabout release had all the power and sonic impact of any modern digital CD recording while maintaning the sweet, warm string and woodwind sounds typical of the best analog recordings.

This pressing just sounds too harsh; sounds much like the early digital LP's and CD issues of the late '70's early '80's vintage.

Despite my minor grousing, this is still far and away the best version you'll find anywhere of this magnificent piece (by the way, the last orchestral composition Rachmaninoff completed before his death in 1943). Well worth the money.

Close miked done properly

This is my second favourite music at the moment. The performance is good, but perhaps a bit leaden. The recording is a good example of close multimiking done well. It is clean and dynamic, but does not display much image depth. Lateral image though is very good.

Superb reading by Johanos!! A real show-piece.

This is definitely the recording to get of this wonderful piece of music by Rachmaninov. Johanos handles it with delicacy and great gusto, and the recording is superb. Excellent CD transfer as well, I was impressed. At this low price it's a complete no-brainer!
