Although always recognized as a trumpeter with unsurpassed lyrical qualities, Chet Baker had many ups and downs in his long career. The very late 1950's was not an up period; the West Coast label he was under contract to readily allowed Riverside to borrow him as leader on four albums. Most of them were extremely uneven, but this one definitely worked.

The album has a strong basic concept (simply to turn Chet loose on some first-class standard-ballad compositions) and one of those casual all-star lineups that the jazz scene of those days made possible: Bill Evans, Kenny Burrell, Herbie Mann, Pepper Adams, Paul Chambers, Connie Kay and Philly Joe Jones.

3.   It Never Entered My Mind
4.   'Tis Autumn
5.   If You Could See Me Now
6.   September Song
7.   You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To
8.   Time On My Hands (You In My Arms)
9.   You And The Night And The Music

There's not much more I could say about the album itself that hasn't been said before. Moody, poignant, amazing. What's most satisfying about spending this much money on a record is having it sound and function the way it's supposed to. Obvious, right? I have purchased over 15 of the "competitions" 200 gm albums, Always hoping that the next one will somehow be better than the last but to no avail. Those folks at the 200 gm. company have GOT to get their act together considering HOW MANY great titles they are releasing. I have had to return nearly ALL of them just to get a slightly better copy, but still with pressing errors. EVERY ONE OF THEM. Maybe it's inherent in the record manufacturing process? NONE OF ACOUSTECH'S RECORDS HAVE BEEN FAULTY. NOT ONE. And I have over 20 of those including 180 gms and 45 rpms. They are also AMAZINGLY quiet. If youi want a true "Classic" record, buy ACOUSTECH. Thanks again for money well spent!
