The year 2009 is the Haydn year, in which May 31 marks the 200th anniversary of his death. And thus the time has come to take another critical look at the usual clichés employed to herald a world-famous composer; at all the ideas that have more or less nestled in our minds during the years and decades. For some decades now, a "Haydn-Renaissance" has been underway in both the research and performance fields, in which both researchers and performing artists are peering beneath the apparently smooth and polished surfaces of Haydn's music and discovering shallows, emotional depths, and singular, humorous aspects.
