"The Stars Are Out is not so much a change of direction as of emphasis, and it's a perfect expression of the signature sass and spirit of Borges and her Broken Singles." — Boston Globe
Walking that fine line between punk and country, Sarah Borges emerged from Boston with her alt-country debut, Silver City, in 2005. Influenced by a wide range of artists including Mahalia Jackson, Sid Vicious, Hank Williams, and Merle Haggard, Borges has a sound that encompasses rootsy barroom country and hard-edged American rock with a fair amount of ease.
Her second album, The Stars Are Out, with her band the Broken Singles, dials back on the alt-country twang of their debut in favor of a pleasantly retro sound that recalls the first wave of country-influenced indie rockers, such as Lone Justice, the Long Ryders, and Green On Red. Borges and her crew are unafraid of being commercial, however: a twangy, flirty cover of Smokey Robinson's "Being With You" and the dreamy "No One Will Ever Love Me" would sound terrific on any radio station.
