Marvin Gaye's What's Going On was a landmark recording and is considered one of the greatest albums ever made. Rolling Stone named it Album Of The Year when it came out and, in 2003, it was ranked No. 6, the highest for a non-rock album, in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. Originally, the title cut was recorded as a single, and Motown chief Berry Gordy refused to release it, citing that it was too personal and political. "What's Going On" became Motown's fastest-selling single at that point, going to the No. 1 spot on the R&B charts for five weeks and No. 2 for three weeks on the Pop listings, which led Gordy to request a full album's worth of material.

Even 35 years later this LP still resonates. I never get tired of Marvin's voice.

Another fine job!

I do not own an original pressing of "What's Going On" to compare this with (see my review of "Let's Get It On") but I was able to compare it with both an early CD version (Motown "compact classic" from 1986, yikes!) and Universal's more recent Deluxe Edition CD from 2001. As you might expect, the MoFi renders the 1986 CD unlistenable. The difference is so astounding in every respect that even the most untrained ear could instantly recognize the superior quality of the MoFi LP. The Deluxe Ed CD presents a much more interesting comparison. It seems as though Universal took it upon themselves to increase the upper midrange of the CD (an attempt to give it a more "modern" sound?). The bass and low mid sound is similar to the MoFi but overall the MoFi sounds much warmer and more like an early 70's recording should sound. The Deluxe Edition does not sound bad, but I don't think it's true. I would love to know what others think and how this compares to the recent Japanese LP or others.
