Mastered from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Gray at AcousTech Mastering and pressed on 180-gram vinyl.

Equal parts blue-eyed soul shouter and wild-eyed poet-sorcerer, Van Morrison is among popular music's true innovators, a restless seeker whose incantatory vocals and alchemical fusion of R&B, jazz, blues and Celtic folk produced perhaps the most spiritually transcendent body of work in the rock & roll canon. While a notoriously difficult and eccentric figure whose steadfast rejection of commercial trends and industry fashions kept him absent from the pop charts for decades at a stretch, Morrison nevertheless enjoyed a massive cult following that grew exponentially throughout the course of his lengthy and prolific career. Subject only to the whims of his own muse, his recordings cover extraordinary stylistic ground yet retain a consistency and purity virtually unmatched among his contemporaries, connected by the mythic power of his singular musical vision and his incendiary vocal delivery: spiraling repetitions of wails and whispers that bypass the confines of language to articulate emotional truths far beyond the scope of literal meaning.

Nice pressing, but may suffer from aging tape

Musically, one of Van's top ten in my book, and the pressing is clean and dead quiet. But, alas, the sound just doesn't jump out into the room. Compared to my 1974 (from the W/R loss leader jacket) pressing of Tupelo Honey, the sound is a bit veiled and restrained. I suspect this may be due to the inevitable fact that it was remastered from a decades-old analog master. Tape slowly degrades, vinyl doesn't. Might want to take a chance on used, though a good one may cost more.

This album has a good band playing mostly acoustic instruments and it has that warmth I seek when playing vinyl.

I expect that a lot of people will review Astral Weeks and Moondance so I thought that I would tackle this one. It's generally thought of as an OK Van LP not one of his best but pretty high up on his long list. I am comparing this to my an original CD copy and to a used LP that has seen better days. It is not often that anything shocks me, but having spent some time with this LP over the last couple of weeks, I can only say that this is the best possible release of this LP, and even if the second side dips slightly on song writing quality it is still a wonderful item and one that you will need on your shelf when the final reckoning comes!
