Praised for his intense, dynamic performances, his compelling, innovative interpretations of the standards, contemporary and Nordic repertoires and the close rapport he establishes with the orchestral musicians he leads, Osmo Vanska is the Minnesota Orchestra's tenth music director as well as principal conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra in Finland. Among the many honors and distinctions he has been awarded are the Pro Finlandia medal, a Royal Philharmonic Society Award, Musical America's Conductor of the Year Award in 2004, the Sibelius Medal in 2005 and the Finlandia Foundation Arts and Letters Award in 2006.
