This limited edition (2,000), one-time-only version of Fruit Tree features all three of Nick Drake's classic studio albums – Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter and Pink Moon. The updated box set (out of print in any form for seven years) includes, on DVD for the first time, the Nick Drake biographical film A Skin Too Few. It's impossible to keep count of the contemporary artists who cite Drake as an inspiration, but a cursory round-up includes R.E.M., Snow Patrol, Norah Jones, Radiohead, Paul Weller, Travis, Portishead, The Coral, Coldplay, David Gray, Super Furry Animals and Beth Orton.

| I was looking forward to the re-release of this box set, especially on vinyl. However, the end result was somewhat underwhelming, especially considering the price tag for the set. While the vinyl is beautifully packaged, with inner and outer sleeves that replicate the original releases, the vinyl itself is somewhat cheap, somewhat noisy, and covered in greasy-looking fingerprints. Ick! (And I'm not alone with those complaints either.)
Shortly after I purchased this set, a representative of the Drake estate said "The vinyl sounds great but we make no ludicrous claims to it being of 'audiophile' quality. They are perfectly round, black...ect..."
Since they don't feel vinyl can be of audiophile quality, that shows just how much effort went into ensuring the best possible vinyl release for this set. Very little...
I would recommend spending the extra money to hunt down the 200g Universal Japanese pressings, which are truly wonderful vinyl pressings...the best you'll ever find.

| In the extra materials that come with the box set, John Wood (who was the original engineer of all three albums) said that he was known for a getting a big, open sound with lots of dynamic range. He was not a fan of "digits". I assume he would be happy with the sound of "Fruit Tree", which exhibits all those qualities.
"Five Leaves Left", the first, is gorgeous chamber folk. "Bryter Layter" has a bigger, band-oriented approach. And "Pink Moon"......... while beautiful, is hard to listen to: it's the sound of a young man coming apart.
Somehow I missed Nick Drake back in the day, and only recently discovered him through the vinyl collection "Treasury". But he truly was an album artist, to whom the greatest hits packages just don't do justice.
The vinyl is nice quality and gives a quiet play. The packaging is first rate, and the accompanying DVD bio gives some real insight into a truly mysterious artist. Highly recommended.
