Harbeth Feature Article
"…I've never heard a speaker reproduce the sounds of voices and acoustic instruments with less timbral distortion or more textural realism…Here, finally, is a loudspeaker that achieves flat frequency response without sucking all the life out of recorded music." – Art Dudley, Stereophile, October 2008
This reference monitor takes the best of the original Monitor 40 even further, and is optimised for home use - producing a tight, dynamic and incredibly revealing presentation.
Designer Alan Shaw has created a speaker which is completely transparent and paints a 3D holographic sound stage which is totally addictive for its neutrality.
The flagship Harbeth of the Harbeth family is the new Monitor 40.2, developed from the hugely respected Monitor 40 widely used in the sound editing and broadcast industry as a control room monitor - and at home around the world. The inspiration of the design is that of the BBC LS5/5 from which it is descended; the world's first plastic-coned loudspeaker. Although originally developed for professional use in BBC control rooms where many pairs are in use, the Monitor 40/40.2 have been adopted as a domestic reference system, and where space permits brings the ultimate in natural sound to the serious home listener.
Whilst the professional version is finished in hard wearing textured paint (and fitted with a Speakon connector) this domestic version is crafted in real wood cherry or eucalyptus veneer and is fitted with two binding post terminals for simplicity and ease of connection. The best possible performance is achieved in a normal domestic room when the Monitor 40.2 is used on appropriately rigid stands in a moderately damped environment.
It's not easy to ascribe a sonic characteristic to the Monitor 40: nor does it have one. Perhaps the concept "three dimensional curtain of sound" says it all. And that is surely what a great monitor is all about.
"I'm very pleased to say that today, 26 July 2005, we were awarded ISO9001 certification. This proves that although we are a small craft business, we have the control and monitoring system in place to ensure that the speakers that leave our door are to the highest standard. Providing that we maintain our QC, the certification lasts for 10 years with an annual audit, and a monthly fee. Is it possible that we are the only UK specialist speaker company to be awarded ISO status?" - Alan Shaw, Harbeth
"The Harbeth speakers are amazing! They are very neutral, yet very articulate. They have quite punchy low end for their size. Drums and percussion are reproduced with stunning weight and clarity. After using them as primary speakers to monitor a direct-to-disc recording, I can recommend them without hestiation!"
