This is the long-anticipated third solo project from guitarist/singer/songwriter David Gilmour, who of course is best known for his historic work with Pink Floyd. We've all been waiting 22 years for another Gilmour solo effort, and On An Island will reward any fan's patience. Gilmour simply wasn't going to release anything until he'd composed another masterpiece. On An Island is a laid-back affair with six of the 10 tunes co-written by Gilmour and his wife, Polly. There are guests galore, including Richard Wright, Georgie Fame, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Jools Holland and many others.

| Well, it's difficult to listen to a David Gilmour album and not try to compare parts of it to any Pink Floyd ("Here they're trying to sound like the guitar part on Wish You Were Here," etc), but once you begin to appreciate it for its own merit, you will be richly rewarded with beautiful and intense music. The tunes range from powerful (Take a Breath) to sweet and lilting (Smile) to rich and mellow (The Blue). Lovely stuff, great recording quality, his guitar work always stellar. The packaging is quite impressive as well, and just a wonderful visit to his music once again. No, it's not Pink Floyd, but it's not really meant to be. It stands well on its own, and worth multiple listens. Lovely stuff!

| Fans of early - mid 70's Pink Floyd will find delight in this album. Many of the songs, be they acoustic or electric, bring to mind what we heard on Meddle, Dark Side, and Wish You Were Here. One track (Take a Breath) brings to mind the post Roger Waters Pink Floyd work.... not my favorite track, but still listenable. All in all, this is solo David Gilmour at his very best. At the age of 62, he still rocks on as good as ever. The record comes housed in a very heavy duty gatefold cover. Unfortunately, it's about 1/4 inch larger than normal, and therefore is larger than any of the jacket sleeves I've been able to find at my local record shops (this record came shrink wrapped... grrr). Included in the package is an awesome poster of David with his guitar, which has the lyrics on the reverse side. Not a good design... a separate lyrics sheet would've been good. Despite the minor packaging oddities, wow... what a fantastic record!!!
