I usually love Munch and the transfers to SACD in the Living Stereo series are usually a treat but for some reason I can't seem to really enjoy this disc of Schubert's symphonies; yet they are among my favorites but in the "old school" style Bohm remains untouchable. Give me Munch on Saint-Saens any day of the week but on those I missed the powerful surges of Bohm. Don't get me wrong, you could do far worse than getting this disc - but there are a few versions with more passion or more power that I would pick first.

Despite the fact that this recording is almost 50 years old, it has lost none of its clarity or dynamic range. It has all the intimacy of vinyl and yet gives you the dynamic range and power that sacd has come to deliver. The subtle two movements of the 8th invite the listener to close his eyes and revel in the beauty of the unfinished masterpiece. The 9th symphony is as expressive and majestic as you expect it to be. All four movements entice the listener and never let you down. For the price of 11.98 it is an absolute steal.
