The present recording of the Gospel cantatas for the three days of Christmas according to the older liturgical tradition (the history of the infant Jesus' birth on the first day, the story of the proto-martyr St. Stephen on the second day and, on the third day, the incarnation of the Word as described by St. John) complements MDG's earlier recording of the Epistle cantatas. Stoelzel's 1728 Christmas Oratorio is thus complete. The Gospel cantatas are clearly the more extrovert pieces. It made sense, therefore, to include in this release the glorious German Te Deum. The New Year cantata, Gehet zu seinen Toren ein, of 1720/21 completes this festive program.
