Mono Never Sounded So Great!

Having a fairly large number of mono LPs I wanted to experiment with a dedicated mono front end on the cheap. All I can say is "Wow!" This cartridge has huge amounts of presence, rich and warm mid-range, and is exceedingly quiet in those old grooves. I think that Denon's specs re frequency response are conservative: it does not sound excessively rolled off on top (although it's not "airy"). It is not as fast or articulate as a modern cartridge, but sometimes playing a 50-60 year old LP with a modern high-resolution cart shows off too many of the record's warts which get in the way. The Denon breaths life and warmth into the recording. Very MUSICAL. You will, however need a fairly heavy arm (I'm using an Audio-Technica ATP-12T) because the Denon is heavy at 13g: most modern arms probably won't even be able to counter-balance it or manage its low-compliance suspension.

A phenomenal value! If you have an appropriate arm don't even think about giving it a try!

The Warm Sound of Pure Mono

I was using the Grado MC+ for many years to listen and enjoy the many mono albums that I have, and it did a very good job. Although I had played some stereo albums with good results I was just not completely satisfied. I installed this unit and although it is almost to the limits of my late 70's turntable counterbalance it registered in at about 3.5 grams tracking. The sound was outstanding, both with mono and stereo records alike. The sound quality was clear and undistorted, even on some of the electronic rechaneled junk that has been put out. It is a pleasure to listen to a vinyl albums, warm, clear, clean sound. Background and turntable noise is greatly reduced and I will probably listen in mono from here on, as I hate to recalibrate the tonearm after a cartridge change. The single coil design seems to work better that a straped stereo cartridge and the sound is very pleasent, you can listen without fatige. Well worth the price, .

a mono cartridge for stereo LPs

this is one heck of a weird cartridge. but only at first glance. let's take that first glance. first the housing. it's made of aluminum and it screams STUDIO! second the two pins. you needn't be a rocket scientist to assume (correctly) that the output is MONO. third the frequency response - uhhm... 50hz to 10k? fourth the weight: 13 grams. what the flying flip?! like i said, the DL-102 is one heck of a weird cartridge.

weird, because it's not built for John Sixpack. the DL-102 was (and probably is) used in AM broadcast. which - where it still exists - is mono by nature. but most LPs are stereo. how to get a mono signal out of a stereo LP without damaging the record? and how to reduce surface noise and clicks and pops? and all of that if possible already bandwith limited for AM? bingo. this makes the DL-102 the perfect cart if you want to listen to otis redding, CCR or wilson pickett like you heard them on the radio when you were young. recommended for special use and great fun!
