Arranger John Lanchbery and his Covent Garden Orchestra lend this collection of pre-revolutionary folk music the bustle and joy of life itself. Glorious melodies which win one over immediately, boisterous dances and beautiful tonal painting in the solo episodes are presented with the utmost freshness and richness.

Nobody else appears to have ever recorded this delightful confection of tunes since this team in 1962. The music is witty and thoroughly enjoyable. The recording (London's Kingsway Hall) has achieved legendary status for its precise and deep sound stage. Producer Winston Ma's notes say that engineer Paul Stubblebine had to battle a worn, fading, overused master tape to make this current transfer. But, he has done a fine job on this challenging task. This transfer reproduces the original recording very well. The recent 180 gram vinyl edition is perhaps a little richer in sound, but has traces of pre-echo and this XRCD is generally cleaner. An early 1970s Australian pressing I have was grittier (all Australian pressed Deccas were), but has a little more sparkle- perhaps a sign of the aging of the mastertape. Nonetheless, Decca London's 15 ips mastertape has come up extremely well, and everybody who loves good music and top-notch engineering needs this recording in their collection.
