The best of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler

For the first time, a compilation brings together the best of one of rock's most admired bands, Dire Straits, and the best of its leader, guitarist-singer-songwriter Mark Knopfler. Private Investigations: Best of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler, a double LP, spans their entire careers.

"This is not only a fine collection for fans because of its wonderful sequencing, but the best introduction to the man and the band that one could ask for." – All Music Guide

Extreme surface noise.

Since rediscovering vinyl, this is the worst album I have purchased. The surface noise is so bad it's distracting. Vacuuming the disc had little effect. Very disappointing.

Sonic quality

Certainly great tracks, but quite frankly I'm not convinced that the sonic quality is really that good. Quite upsetting really. Compared the sonic quality to Morph the Cat and the Donald Fagen album is in another league completely Have only played Private Investigations twice and probably never again. Douglas

Sonically great, but beware of some editing...

To be honest, I have yet to listen to the other 3 sides, but there is one thing I was instantly shocked by. My first spin had to be Money for Nothing. I generally use the song to show off the soundstage when Sting is wafting around the room at the start of the song, and the dynamics of my system when the drums just blast the listener out of the chair. It is a very impressive start to any song. Unfortunately, they cut that entire section out of the version on this LP. I was stunned to hear the song slowly fading up during the end of the drum intro. I had to go back two more times to make sure this wasn't a mistake. The sound quality and noise level of the LP were great, but honestly, I couldn't even flip the record due to my shock and anger. Hopefully, the other songs aren't chopped up or majorly re-edited. Silence and sound quality are superb, but be warned if you like your songs unaltered.

Don't expect Telegraph Road

Be careful - The description noting 22 tracks, "beginning with Telegraph Road" is not what you get! The 14 song selection list is correct.
