Utah Symphony Orchestra
Mahler’s Fourth Symphony is notably refined and subtle in style and technique and was considered his best to date. The tone of the piece is much lighter than in his previous works and almost childlike at times, having been derived in large part from the joyful folk poems of Das Knaben Wunderhorn (The Young Boy’s Magic Horn). Opening with evocations of nature and closing with his depiction of child’s view of heaven, Mahler creates a world of gentle innocence that is triumphantly interpreted in this sensitive performance of Abravanel and his Utah Symphony Orchestra. The acclaimed Netania Davrath lends her silvery soprano to this recording, making it one of the most evocative and thrilling performances in the Mahler set.
