Barney Kessel, Shelly Manne, and Ray Brown did not record together simply because they all happened to have won first place on their respective instruments in the Down Beat, Playboy, and Metronome polls. Their collaboration was due to mutual respect, and their sensitivity to one another's musical requirements. Here, in a set composed mainly of pop and jazz standards, they represent the ultimate in their fields, constituting a rhythm section that also provides brilliant solo interludes by all three members. Collectively, Kessel, Manne, and Brown won dozens of polls over the years; this record eloquently tells you why.

I had never heard of this lp until I found it browsing through the Fantasy reissues on the site. I know all 3 artists, and wasn't familiar with this series. I listened to some samples and decided to get it copy, and thanks goodness I did. Fantasy and the associated labels might not have had as many 'household' name artists on their rosters as Verve and other labels, but they still had a lot of great albums, including this one. And the mastering is spectacular. So many of the original releases were not always the best pressings, so it's great to hear one like this that is so quiet and clean. It's like the 45rpm release of the Vince Guaraldi 'Charlie Brown Christmas' album that has never sounded so amazing before. So if you like really good jazz trio recordings, get this while it's still available.

This is what great music sounds like. I am a guitarist of 40 years and Kessel has always been one of my favorites. His lines are crisp. Ray and Shelly are the perfect compliments. No elevator music here.

This album may be 50 years old, but I couldn't care less. This is flat out, a superbly played disc with superb musicians at their prime. It's also the perfect LP to demonstrate to the "perfect sound forever" crowd how an older recording can still sound great, even to obsessive audiophiles. Here's something else to think about. This is also the perfect album to play for those who claim not to like Jazz, but that wishy-washy "easy listening" elevator music.
