From the moment he exploded from Florida onto the New York scene in 1955, Cannonball Adderley was accepted by musicians, critics and listeners as a welcome arrival. By the time he and Milt Jackson teamed up for Things Are Getting Better, Adderley was becoming a major figure, due in part to his membership in the Miles Davis Sextet, but primarily because of the expansive joyousness of his playing. Jackson’s role in modern jazz went back to the early days of bebop when Dizzy Gillespie sent for him in 1945 to come from Detroit and join his sextet. Adderley and Jackson had in common superb skills in all aspects of music, a broad understanding and deep appreciation of jazz history and styles, and the earthiness bred by immersion in the blues. With the superlative rhythm section of Wynton Kelly, Percy Heath and Art Blakey, they produced one of the most exhilarating albums of the twentieth century.

All of these 45 reissues are the best. This one happens to end up at the top of my pile. The sound is excellent and the playing by Milt and Cannonball is top notch. If you want a recording where the band is right in the room with you then this is it. I am really tempted to get one more of these as a back up. I know of no original or Japanese that equal this. There seems to be one problem with the disk... I think the original recording tape has stretched. You can hear this on side 3 of the disk at the end of the piano solo. The piano gets very wobbly and so does the band. This lasts for about 25 seconds then it all goes away. I have checked this on 3 separate records and they all do it. Never the less its still great. This entire series of 45 reissues should be purchased by any jazz lover... end of sentence.
