This classical XRCD 24 features the important works of both Ludwig Van Beethoven and Franz Schubert. Beethoven's Fifth Symphony was written over a period of four years and was originally introduced to the public in a performance that included his Sixth Symphony and the Choral Fantasy, Op. 80. Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony" originally was given as a gift to the director of the Styrian Music Society, who promptly put it away in his desk drawer until his younger brother discovered it many years later. Charles Munch conducts the Boston Symphony Orchestra on both pieces recorded during the historic years when Classical Music was enjoying tremendous popularity.

Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67
I. Allegro con brio
II. Andante con moto
III. Allegro (attacca)
IV. Allegro

Schubert: Symphony No. 8 in B Minor, D.759 ''Unfinished''
I. Allegro moderato
II. Andante con moto

The performance is fine. I've had the RCA Victrola stereo LP in my collection from the late 60s.

I was just curious to see if the XRCD version sounds close enough to the original to justify paying twice as much as I'd pay for an SACD version. It wasn't good enough to justify that expenditure to my ears, which are old, by the way. Sony SCD-2000 ES SACD player (CD players wear out about as fast as Corvettes) along with the rest of my now vintage system just didn't overwhelm me. Maybe a $20,000 CD playback apparatus makes XRCD worthwhile?

So, I tried XRCD. It didn't make socks roll down. So I'll stay with the other formats.

Stay away from JVC XRCD

This JVC reissue is not an audiophile cd. The sound is very bright and unpleasant. This is especially true of the JVC reissue of the Szeryng/Monteaux Brahms Violin Concerto. The latter is unlistenable. The JVC XRCD series that is being re-mastered and produced in the US are, by virtue of what I've heard on Kerry Burrell's "Soul Call," much better. I bought several JVC XRCD CDs from Acoustic Sounds, and I have sold them to Ameoba Records for pennies on the dollar. Acoustic Sounds, an outstanding company with a wonderful staff, would do well to remove the JVC XRCD line from their cataloge. It's that bad.
