Harry Belafonte has never before sung on records as he does in this album. He is freer, more earthy, more exultantly identified with his material than ever before. He has always communicated an often ferocious power as well as lyrical sensitivity, but in this collection he achieves a unity of emotional strength in and understanding of his material that marks an important stage in his evolution as an artist. Includes classic songs "Cotton Fields," "God Bless The Child," "Hallelujah I Love Her So." Recorded in NY, Jan. 29, 1958.
1.   A Fool For You
2.   Losing Hand
3.   One for My Baby
4.   In The Evenin' Mama
5.   Hallelujah I Love Her So
6.   The Way That I Feel
7.   Cotton Fields
8.   God Bless' The Child
9.   Mary Ann

I was more than positively surprised hearing this record....I had a totally different connotation regarding Harry Belafonto (Pop singer, nice voice, but superficial songs). What a fantastic experience. This is blues as it should be in a top quality recording. Did he do more of this?

I thought that Belafonte at Carnegie Hall was the reference H.B. album but I am enjoying this much more. He really connects to these bluesy songs, the renditions are timeless and exceptionally well recorded. For me, this is now my favorite Belafonte album.

I bought the record in 1960. Got some damage on it, before CD copying on computer was invented. For several years I'm trying to find a CD version of this fantastic record, of which every swing and every detail of B's performance is still in my mind after so many years. Forget all that calypso and banana boat stuff! Here´s Harry Belafonte at his best!!! I've heard this record for the 1st and last time more than 25 years ago and never forgot it but never could find it anywhere. And now all of us could ear it in a perfect 200g pressing. Don't miss it for your own sake.
