Not much needs to be said about this one. So many of his greatest songs are here. Tracks one through 14 were all originally recorded on analog multi-track magnetic tape in formats ranging from one-inch eight track to two-inch 24 track. In each case, after the recording process was completed, these multi-track master tapes were mixed to 1/4-inch stereo two-channel at 15 IPS analog master tapes. At that time, these tapes were among those assembled onto two sequenced LP master reels which were then used to cut the metal lacquers from which two sides of the original vinyl LPs were ultimately pressed. These same two-channel masters were used for this project. Simply put, the goal was to achieve as accurate and detailed an extraction of the original audio signal as possible.

"...the sound on this double set is absolutely, mind-blowingly, stunningly superior to whichever version you previously thought ruled. Orange and tan Warner-7Arts/Reprise original Everybody Knows This is Nowhere? Forget about it! 'Down By The River,' 'Cowgirl in The Sand' (given all of side 1), and 'Cinnamon Girl' have never sounded this expansive, dynamic, etched-in-granite pure and clean. Never has the bass been delivered with such stunning detail and 'pop.'...the tracks here from After the Goldrush sound so much better than on any other version I've heard, it's positively sick. Every song sounds better than I've ever heard before, thanks to the care taken in the transfer and mastering process. Wait until you hear 'Old Man,' or 'Heart of Gold,' from Harvest! According to information on Neil Young's website, for the double LP, 30 IPS 'flat' copies were created and assembled from the original analog masters of tracks 1-14, while tracks 15 and 16 were transferred from up-converted 176.4/24 bit digital masters created from the original lower resolution digital originals." Good song selection and sound. Heavy, flat slabs of vinyl. Quiet vinyl and even presentation.

Disappointing digital...

I had no idea that this album was digital...

I didn't make it more than 3 mins into "down by the river" before pulling out the liner notes in disgust at what I was hearing. And confirmed what I was hearing... Digital.

Flat, grainy, lifeless digital sound. Sure its quite but who cares. Crappy sound. I should have read the reviews and seen the couple of other folks who picked up on this also.

I see the "advert" text from Michael Fermer. I am well versed in analogue sound (4500 record collection). What gives here?

This is superb, despite the fact that NY claims that the songs were chosen from hit singles and such, in other words publicly accepted songs. Of course he was probably not glad with having to do that, but the sound in this is phenomenal. Great work by everybody. Did I enjoy it....I could not get myself out of the chair once the needle hit the groove and for a moment I was contemplating having 2 turntables and 2 sets of this record so I can place side B ready to play. Get it.

The Majority Rule!

Sometimes all I need is one bad review to cause me to hesitate and reconsider a purchase. This time I soo wanted to believe the majority as I love Neils' music, and really wanted a great sounding collection on vinyl. I'm ecstatic to have this album arrive today and to be able to give it a listen. As soon as the needle landed and started playing what I believe to be the most startlingly clean and perfectly mastered Neil Young tracks, that I new the majority was right! This collection is as special as Neil himself.. And that says a lot! Don't hesitate you won't be sorry.

Disappointing stuff I'm afraid. For all the remastering and heavy vinyl, this is no improvement on my original 60s and early 70s Reprise albums I bought new in period. So do yourself a favour, see if you can buy a clean original - or wait to buy mine when I'm gone!

After listening to this, I think Neil Young is honestly the grandfather of grunge. The analog sound that oozes out of Hey Hey, My My is absolutely awesome, it sounds like Nirvana before they knew how to hold a guitar. Seriously, it sounds like it could have been on the Bleach album. Every other song is what you expect from a Classic Release on the 200 gram vinyls. The only problem is the louder you play it the better it sounds - I got sick of my wife telling me to lower the volume. One of my favorite lp's already and I've only owned it 3 days!

The absolute flat-out greatest fidelity recording I've ever heard

I bought my first record somewhere in the mists of the early seventies- I've been listening a while. I also thought I knew the limitations of my stereo, which is a hodge-podge of newish & oldish gear that still sounds sweet enough it's kept me happy for longer than I care to remember. I put this thing on and not only did my stereo disappear, my living room also dissolved with me in it like a Jules Verne time machine plopping me in the studio with Neil & Crazy Horse. I was trembling like Trent Lott at a Jay-Z concert. I have maybe 80% of Young's catalog on CD & 30% still on vinyl, and it's like I've never even heard his music. He was right. They were right. The digital revolution was/is a filthy lie (and I am aware how some of these songs were recorded or mastered). Edison still rocks, the guys who forced the 44.1K standard on us will be footnotes someday. Do yourself a favor- steal a decent turntable if you have to. Then buy this record. It'll ruin your life.

I was blown away by the sound of this classic records release and I highly recommend it. If you like Neil Young then this is a must have! If you dont have a turn table then you better get one quick. I just bought 3 extra copies so when its out of print I will have a life time supply. Keep up the good work classic records and acoustic sounds.

Actually I don't think Neil "always" prefered vinyl to digital. His late 80s and early 90s albums were all recorded, mixed and mastered digitally (i.e. DDD): 1988's "This Note's For You" through to 1992's "Harvest Moon". He even named his studio "Redwood Digital". It was only in 95 or so that he had a massive change of heart and rediscovered analog.

Secondly, though I'm sure there is no unintended distortion on this record, it is however mastered very "loud", which can cause your record player to sound distorted if not properly set up. I also noticed that a number of recordings have quite intrusive sibilance (e.g. After The Gold Rush), however I presume that is because they have been mastered from original tapes which have not been passed through the usual sibilance filters, as this is only present on a few of the tracks.

Sorta Disappointing

Ordered this album expecting some great things. Unfortunately I was disappointed. The sound quality of most of the tracks leaves something to be desired, especially my two favorite songs "Cowgirl in the Sand" and "cortez the Killer". Distortion was evident throughout, and I'm not talking about the type that Neil intentionally put in his guitar amplification. I know Mr. Young espouses analog but this did not show off anything.

Other than Aja and Steely Dan albums thereafter, this is the best sounding rock/pop album I've ever heard. What a spectacular job. A must buy.
