Like most overnight successes, Isaac Hayes had a long history of hard work and struggle before his 1969 "Walk on By/By The Time I Get To Phoenix" single hit Number One on the Billboard charts and stayed there for 10 weeks. The album it came from, Hot Buttered Soul, was on the pop charts for 81 weeks. Any thought that Hayes was a flash in the pan dissipated the next year when "I Stand Accused" from The Isaac Hayes Movement shot to Number One and remained there for seven weeks. Not only was Hayes firmly established as a popular icon (recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), but he had also forced the record industry to embrace soul music as an album concept. With his stern visage and shaved head on album covers, he became a symbol of Black pride. He was a trendsetter. His long, intimate, spoken prologue to Jerry Butler’s "I Stand Accused" anticipated the rap phenomenon. For the next decade, Isaac Hayes albums were on every pop chart, some weeks two or three at a time.
