Tenor Madness is famous for its title piece, a celebrated collaboration and face-off of the leading new tenor saxophone stylists of the mid-1950s. In their only recorded meeting, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane played the blues with, at and around one another in a prodigy of exhilaration and inventiveness. Their encounter exemplified the state of advanced modern tenor saxophone jazz improvisation and helped set standards toward which players of the instrument have strived for decades. The SACD sound brings their adventure into bold relief. In the rest of the album, Rollins used three standard songs and one of his compositions as vehicles for the rhythmic mastery and melodic invention that made him one of the most discussed young soloists in years. Rollins applied his rich, humorous, often quirky imagination to pieces that were familiar (“When Your Lover Has Gone”), unusual as jazz tunes (“My Reverie,” “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World”), and new (“Paul’s Pal”).
