Three decades ago, when Riverside paired Thelonious Monk and Gerry Mulligan on this album, it seemed a daring move. These two appeared to represent opposite ends of the jazz spectrum, separated by geography (East Coast and West) as much as by style (bop vs. cool). Actually, it was a rather safe project: producer Orrin Keepnews had learned that the two men were friends; even more importantly, it is now clear that both were the kind of revolutionaries who had substantial (and not dissimilar) respect for jazz tradition. The album was, as advertised, a meeting of giants, but its most lasting value may be as proof that there was a strong bond connecting theoretically opposing forms of early modern jazz.

APO does Monk right!

Mulligan Meets Monk cut at 45 rpm by APO is a revelation to the ears. Mulligan's baritone took on new tonalities and shadings I had never before heard in this album. If I had the funding I would purchase every Riverside jazz 45rpm release done by Analogue Productions.


Where is the string bass?

I think this is a recording to get, but I must ask... where did the string bass go? Its so suppressed (maybe on the original recording as well) that's it almost invisible. Both the bass and drums are kept in the background but I must say I think it affects the overall balance of the ensemble. There are times it sounds kind of empty. It could be the bass player didn't want to get in the way of the Bari Sax, but I don't think the bass needs to almost go away.
