Great album, terrible sounding discs

This album is one of the all time classics. That being said, it is a real shame that this version sounds so bad! All of the rest of the Elton John SACDs sound wonderful. This one, literally hurts me to listen to -- it gives me a headache. The clarity just isn't there, it just sounds like noise. The remastered CD from the late 90s sounds so much better than this. After hearing this one, I spent the extra money to get the Japanese SHM-SACD. It didn't sound any better. Maybe someday there will be a good sounding SACD of this title, but not right now, unfortunately.

Buy the Mobile Fidelity version

The sound quality of the exact same title in standard CD (not SACD) by Mobile Fidelity sounds better. Dynamic range and "presence" seem better. The only advantage of this SACD version is the addition of previously unreleased cuts, e.g., acoustic version of Candle In The Wind.

Not the Best

You know a good recording/remaster when you can listen for long periods and get lost in the music. Well if I listen to this one for too long I get a headache. This is not as good as other EJ remasters. I am only listening to 2 channel SACD. It is a far cry from Mad Man. It's better than red book CD but not analogue sounding. I don't know if it is the master tapes or the remastering.

I give it 2.75 stars.

For starters, the 2.0 version of this classic disc is in no way better than the SACD version. If you want to hear what SACD is all about, then simply experience any of Elton John's SACD re-issues. Pure sonic magic, especially when compared to other less than acceptable SACD releases. And unfortunately, there are many. For example, Toto IV. But that's a story for another day. With that said, I only have one question...... Where are the SACD re-issues of Rock Of The Westies and Blue Moves? True E.J. fans want to know.......

Good in spots

Sonic quality very good as compared to other SACD's I own. There IS a glitch on one CD that causes skips at the end. However, overall it isn't bad. I have no qualms with how the sound engineer lays out the surround environment. (BTW, in fairness to another reviewer who did not like the sonic quality of Yellow Brick Road 5 channel SACD, I would gently suggest Frampton Comes Alive in SACD multi-channel for a truly terrible mix that everyone might agree is the worst SACD they have ever heard!

Leave the shrink wrap on

This is absoutley the worst SACD I have ever purchased. The surround mix is horrid with instruments mis-placed in the side channels drawing the focus away from the vocals. Additionally the 2nd disk has an error in the catalouge and you cannot skip to a song. The only option is to listen to every track in order (it's all seen as a single track)

The 2 channel version is much better.
