The days are long since gone when Swedish choral singing a cappella was practiced only by university students. So too the days when student choruses were by necessity male voice only. By necessity, because there were no female university students, neither in Uppsala nor in Lund. But, when winter gives way to spring, when the snow melts away and dusk lingers long after sunset ever later each evening, something stirs at the very foundation of our souls. These feelings connect us to those 19th century student choristers, who feeling them just as strongly sang many songs associated with spring. That tradition continues in Sweden where every year in Stockholm, the Stockholm Academic Male Chorus greets spring in the Skansen open-air museum. This recording captures some of their most beloved songs.
