Wes Montgomery appeared on the national jazz scene in 1960 as if from out of nowhere. In fact, he was from Indianapolis, where he had been playing incredible jazz guitar for years. Musicians traveling through Indianapolis marveled at his warmth, speed, creativity, unconventional thumb technique and octave passages. "Man," they would say, "you ought to be in New York." Finally, Cannonball Adderley insisted that Riverside Records sign Montgomery. By the end of the year the guitarist had recorded two albums. This, his second, became one of the most admired and influential recordings in the annals of the music. Listeners loved it. Guitarists worshipped it. Hundreds of guitarists have patterned, or tried to pattern, their playing after Montgomery’s. Incredible Jazz Guitar is a high point in Montgomery’s short career and in the history of the instrument.
