This is the album that redefined the piano trio, changed the way modern jazz pianists used harmony and influenced the course of music in the last half of the 20th century. Bill Evans’ chord voicings, his strength and lyricism, his melodic conception, were major elements in the landmark Miles Davis Kind of Blue recording in November 1959. The next month, Portrait in Jazz found Evans leading the ideal trio he had been conceptualizing for years. Evans, the astonishing virtuoso bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian interacted with cohesiveness, responsiveness, and empathy that set new standards. They achieved spontaneous musical thought as if sharing one mind. Evans demonstrated that true freedom in music could be achieved not outside of, but within, the song form.
