This is a great Heifetz performance, and for the first time you'll be able to enjoy the recording as well, given the use of the original three-track session master for the transfer. Diminished is the bright, thin string tone that was partially an artifact of the three-to-two-channel mix down tape used for the original pressing. Back are the full dynamics and bass that are on the session tape. Is it better than the original? You be the judge.

This wonderful reissue could easily turn any casual listener into a vinyl aficionado. It is utterly remarkable how Classic Records managed to revive this 50-year old recording and extract such clarity and detail. I did not realize what acoustic richness was actually captured on these old master tapes.

This recording creates a virtually perfect illusion of Jascha Heifetz’s presence on the soundstage. His violin seems tangible, almost within reach of the listener. Also, the Boston Symphony’s sound is so rich in color and yet highly transparent at the same time. The soloist and the orchestra are in such wonderful balance.

As one of my favorite pieces, I have listened to countless recordings and live performances of Beethoven’s violin concerto, but the pace and energy of this recording gave me goose bumps all over again. May Classic Records unearth many more such treasures!
