Few artists have created a body of work as rich and varied as Prince. During the '80s, he emerged as one of the most singular talents of the rock 'n' roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. The unforgettable title track from the 1984 soundtrack album, it was released originally as the third single. The song reached No. 2 in the United States for two weeks, behind "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" by Wham!, and it's considered one of Prince's signature songs. It was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1984, shipping one million units in the United States, and it was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry in 2013.
After Prince's death in 2016, the song rose to No. 1 on the U.S. and U.K. iTunes Charts, allowing "Purple Rain" to re-enter the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 17, later reaching No. 4. It also re-entered the U.K. Singles Chart at No. 6, making it two places higher than its original peak of No. 8. Originally peaking at No. 12 in France, "Purple Rain" reached No. 1 on the national singles chart. As of April 30, 2016, it has sold 1,186,215 copies in the United States.
