The latest release from the Seattle Symphony’s Grammy-nominated label is a provocative coupling of two great works by European composers reflecting their response to the vibrant culture of the New World.

Varèse’s Amériques, written only 30 years after Dvorák’s beloved 'New World' Symphony, is a pivotal masterpiece that changed the course of music forever. In live performances of electrifying energy, and recorded in stunning sound, this is a mind-bending combination of masterpieces.

Among the countless persons who have made their way to America’s shores are more than a few composers. During the 1930s and early ‘40s, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Bartók, Hindemith and others found refuge here from the calamities befalling Europe. Well before them, however, came such major figures as Tchaikovsky, Dvorák, Mahler, Bloch, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov, Ravel and Varèse. Some stayed briefly, others settled here. Two of them, Dvorák and Varèse, created major compositions inspired, in different ways, by their experience of America. Their compositions are the subject of this recording, the latest release from the Seattle Symphony’s Grammy®-nominated label. This provocative, mind-bending combination of masterpieces, a coupling of two great works by European composers reflecting their response to the New World, offers Dvorák’s beloved “New World” Symphony, and Edgard Varèse’s Amériques, a pivotal masterpiece that changed the course of music forever, and written only 30 years after Dvorák’s last symphony.
