"... chronicles the first great segment of (Coltrane's) career ... his playing is superlative throughout ... Coltrane's companions are fine players, but the crystalline brilliance and sharpness of Coltrane's tone and his relentless flow of melodic ideas make it hard to believe that he's playing the same instrument they're playing ... a tremendous introduction not only to Coltrane, but to jazz of the 50s and, in terms of influence, far beyond." — All About Jazz

Recorded and released in 1957 by an all-star "house band" at Prestige Records, this album features rising star John Coltrane, Mal Waldron, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers and Art Taylor. The titular trumpets are played by Idrees Sulieman and Webster Young, while the other tenor sax player beside Coltrane is Bobby Jaspar. Pianist Waldron wrote the four tracks contained on the original release, notably his most famous tune Soul Eyes; this edition also includes the bonus song "C.T.A." by Jimmy Heath.
