Winner of eight 2003 Grammys, Come Away With Me is THE talk of the music world right now. What timing to have it available on SACD. There's no way you haven't heard "Don't Know Why," the signature cut of this record. Now hear it on Hybrid Multichannel SACD. Norah Jones debut on Blue Note is a mellow, acoustic pop affair with soul and country overtones, immaculately produced by the great Arif Mardin. Jones, the daughter of Ravi Shankar, is not quite a jazz singer, but she is joined by some highly regarded jazz talent: guitarists Adam Levy, Adam Rogers, Tony Scherr, Bill Frisell, and Kevin Breit; drummers Brian Blade, Dan Rieser, and Kenny Wolleson; organist Sam Yahel; accordionist Rob Burger; and violinist Jenny Scheinman. Her regular guitarist and bassist, Jesse Harris and Lee Alexander, respectively, play on every track and also serve as the chief songwriters. Both have a gift for melody, simple yet elegant progressions, and evocative lyrics.

Worth Buying Again

I bought this on a whim when I stumbled upon the SACD at a big box store.

The improvement over the Red Book Cd is not subtle; it's leaps and bounds better. This is the type of album that really soars on SACD. The stage is better, and as another reviewer noted, the presence of Norah's voice is improved as well.

If you only own the CD, do pick this up or the 200 gram vinyl, which is equally up to the task.

Better than the Standard CD

This is clearly a blockbuster album. It's as big a debut as Sweet Baby James or Anticipation were years ago and almost as good as Joni Mitchell's Blue in my opinion. I've compared my two versions, CD and SACD using headphones and on the SACD the voice is clearer and softer. You can hear the space in the room or studio she's in which makes it seem more real. Her voice is especially clear in Cold, Cold Heart (Hank Williams). Let's get some more of those country classics.

A bit of a disappointment.

I was a huge fan of the original album (along with the rest of the planet) and eagerly awaited this SACD and the surround bliss that would surely follow. So, when it didn't happen, I was a bit disappointed.

This disc is not without merit -- obviously having the high resolution stereo and 5.1 mixes provides much greater fidelity. What it's missing is an expressive 5.1 mix.

I noted that the 5.1 mix had the same production team as the original album and I must wonder how much "surround expert" help they had with it. The soundfield isn't very engaging, the voices and instruments tend to bounce around a bit never staying in one place too long and the surrounds are frequently dormant except when reproducing echo.

The best comparison I can make is a Dolby Digital or DTS soundtrack compared to a Dolby Pro Logic one -- there's no comparison. For better or worse, this sounds like Pro Logic and given the original effort I expected more.
