Gatefold double LP

In the summer of 1975, the Herbie Hancock Sextet made a hugely successful tour of Japan, which made people aware of a "new" Hancock. The last LP that the keyboard virtuoso had recorded, Thrust, was already one year old, and the film music for the Charles Bronson classic "Death Wish" was received negatively by his fans. At his concerts in Tokyo, Herbie Hancock reached back to his hits: "Maiden Voyage", "Chameleon", and the famous, soulful "Watermelon Man" made the fans at his concert hall and open-air appearances go wild with enthusiasm.

Forty years later, this re-release in its original format has given fans the opportunity to check out whether this music has withstood the test of time. And it has passed the test! Just listen to Herbie at his best!

This is probably Herbie's most under-appreciated album of the mid 70's jazz/funk/fusion era. It's an awesome live performance that consists mostly of Head Hunters, Thrust and Man Child material. Recorded and performed beautifully. If you like funky Herbie, this is a must have for your collection.

The pressing quality is spectacular. Speakers Corner is doing some of the best vinyl reissues out there. They use only analog masters, all analog processing, and they are pressed at Pallas Germany. Pallas Germany is pressing the best vinyl on the planet right now. The quality of their vinyl is consistently better than MOFI and QRP.

I've listened to the CD release of this album for 10 years. Every listen reveals another layer of greatness. Is this a viable purchase? I'll answer the question with a question: Were the images captured by the Hubble telescope better after the lens correction? I thought I was familiar with Flood....I've only scratched the surface. Buy it. Buy it now.

If you are a Herbie Hancock fan and do not own this album, I highly recommend you get it. It was recorded live and has some interesting microphone techniques but on the Butterfly track (dedicated to the beautiful women of Tokyo) the music rolls into the room like a mist, crawls along the sidewalls, and then envelopes you in its power. It's eerie, almost as if you have a surround sound system with several speakers. Enjoy!
