45 RPM

180-gram gatefold double LP

Half-speed remastered and cut to lacquers at 45 RPM

Limited to 10,000 copies worldwide

Peter Gabriel presents remastered limited edition viny versions of his first four solo records. This marks their return to the format for the first time since 2002.

It's the first in a series that will see all of his records available in vinyl. The eponymous albums in this first batch — referred to as 1 to 4 or Car, Scratch, Melt and Security, based on their cover art — followed his departure from Genesis in 1975, and established Gabriel as a solo artist.

Each 180-gram double album is presented in a gatefold jacket, in an individually-numbered run of 10,000 copies worldwide. Long out-of-print German vocal versions of Gabriel's third and fourth albums will be limited to 3,000 copies each. Albums come with downloads in a choice of resolutions: hi-res 24-bit/96k or 16-bit/44.1k.

Produced by Steve Lillywhite this third album saw Peter change his writing style; now the rhythm came before the melody and the songs were built up on top of the rhythmic sequences. The album delivered a Top 5 U.K. single in "Games Without Frontiers" and Peter's first overtly political song in the shape of totemic closer "Biko." It also features notable contributions from Kate Bush, Paul Weller, Phil Collins and David Rhodes. Half-speed remastered and cut to lacquers at 45 RPM, across two heavyweight LPs to deliver maximum dynamic sound range. Vinyl cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy Mastering, mastered by Tony Cousins at Metropolis and overseen by Peter's main sound engineer Richard Chappell. These albums really have never sounded so good! They also look amazing with the gatefold sleeves utilizing imagery from the initial release, sourced and re-scanned from original artwork.

I'm not sure what another reviewer was referring to, as I am very sensitive to "shrill" recordings. This LP set is far from it. Plus, these were not even "audiophile" recordings to begin with, so we are left with whatever is on the original tapes, which none of us have ever heard in person.

Having said that, this is the clearest I've heard PG3, and I have it in a few other versions. The vinyl surface is dead quiet, and while I normally dislike 45RPM LPs and how they throw off the flow of listening to an album, these are worth spinning every so often even if they are bloody inconvenient to play.

The fourth side is the real show-stopper. Demo material. It's not like it is overly dynamic or a sonic blockbuster, but "Lead a Normal Life" and "Biko" are heard so clearly that they become a goosebump-inducing experience.

A nice perk is having a high-res download available, unlike the shoddy MP3 downloads most vinyl packages include. PG treats his fans

Who mastered these?

I wanted so badly for these 45 rpm rereleases to be my go to PG 1-4 While these have detail they are so tonally off they are unlistenable except on the most sombre pieces - lead a normal life, family snapshot

Better than US originals on details (those sound murky) but bested by UK, Japanese and Classic pressing which are so much more natural sounding

Sad Real World did great on the packaging and shrill on the sound

Worth every penny.

I own the original pressing, the Japanese import, the SACD, the 200 gram Classic Records, and the 45rpm 200 gram red box Classic Records pressings -- none of which match the detail and air that surround the instruments and soundscape of this version. Each track deserves it's own review but suffice it to say that every track impresses. Bass that slams, Gabriel's voice that hangs in mid air, and highs that you can reach out and touch. This is the one version of 3 / Melt that every Peter Gabriel fan should own. Long live vinyl!!!!!!
