Although always recognized as a trumpeter with unsurpassed lyrical qualities, Chet Baker had many ups and downs in his long career. The very late 1950's was not an up period; the West Coast label he was under contract to readily allowed Riverside to borrow him as leader on four albums. Most of them were extremely uneven, but this one definitely worked.

The album has a strong basic concept (simply to turn Chet loose on some first-class standard-ballad compositions) and one of those casual all-star lineups that the jazz scene of those days made possible: Bill Evans, Kenny Burrell, Herbie Mann, Pepper Adams, Paul Chambers, Connie Kay and Philly Joe Jones.

Mastered by Doug Sax.

Originally released in 1959.

Chet Baker, trumpet
Pepper Adams, sax (baritone)
Kenny Burrell, guitar
Paul Chambers, bass
Bill Evans, piano
Philly Joe Jones, drums
Connie Kay, drums
Herbie Mann, flute

Those who love Chet Baker must have this record. It plays songs of exceptional beauty performed by the master and his band. And his voice, cracked a little bit, gives an additional charm to the whole performance.

I purchased this lp on the strength of the reviews posted here and like others after the first listen I feel compelled to share the joy. Rest assured this is a beautiful work... both in terms of sound and performance.

This is a cool Chet record. Bill Evans seems right at home with Chet. Pepper Adams adds to the bottom which is sorely needed with this yearning ballad gig.

I have an original Riverside plus an OJC that I bought sealed for $14.98 a few years ago up here in Canada. I bought the Analogue Productions version and I feel compelled to write a review about this record at 3:30 a.m.!

I have just finished listening to the first side on my Stax headphones. I have never heard such subtlety and clarity on this Chet Baker recording. Spend the extra $10. It is worth it.

The reason I am on this site is that I have gone out and bought a couple Sonny Rollins records from the same label.

I do not regret buying my third copy of this album. Sonically, it is brilliant.
