Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Album of All Time — rated 161/500

The Dock of the Bay is the first of a number of posthumously released Otis Redding albums, and his seventh studio album. It contains a number of singles and B-sides dating back to 1965 and one of his best known songs, the posthumous hit "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay." In 2003, the album was ranked No. 161 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

One of the most influential soul singers of the 1960s, Otis Redding exemplified to many listeners the power of Southern 'deep soul' — hoarse, gritty vocals, brassy arrangements, and an emotional way with both party tunes and aching ballads. At the time of his tragic death at the age of 26, Redding was on the verge of breaking through to a wide pop audience (which he would indeed do with his posthumous number one single "Sittin' On the Dock Of the Bay").

"...a vivid, exciting presentation of some key aspects of the talent that was lost when Redding died...this is an impossible record not to love...No one could complain about the album then, and it still holds more than four decades later." — AllMusic
