Cut by Stan Ricker and pressed at RTI on 180-gram virgin vinyl!

The seventh studio album from the increasingly popular and always-excellent Wilco. Led by the incomparable Jeff Tweedy, Wilco has been primarily about alt-country rock. In fact, they more or less carved out an entire genre, into which countless following bands have thrown their records. But they veered off course with their still-quite-good Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost Is Born, which included some pretty far-out experimentation. Sky Blue Sky takes Wilco back into the pocket. The new record takes on jazz, acoustic folk, a little blues, some rock and, of course, some good, good country. It's been a long, torturous wait for Wilco fans (their last studio album, A Ghost Is Born, came out in 2004), but Sky Blue Sky has all the makings of a sure-to-please effort – Tweedy's ultra-range voice, their outstanding technical guitar work and some damn fine songwriting.

What a great job of mastering. This is one of the quietest, well-rounded recordings I've had the pleasure of hearing. With bonus cd (also analogue sounding) this is a no brainer.

Not up to the usual standard

I don't know why they even bothered to press this on vinyl, as in this case it only accentuates the "punched-up" nature of the master recording itself. It seems that the producers have employed generous amount of multi-band compression to make each track sound as "loud" as possible for radio play, and then boosted everything around 6kHz to liven up the mix.

The problem is that this pressing further accentuates the boosted highs making for a pretty unpleasant listening experience. I know it's not my system because well-recorded CD/vinyl comparisons such as The White Stripes' Elephant and Nirvana's In Utero are identical spectrum-wise.

I have purchased a lot of vinyl at Acoustic Sounds and have to say that this is the only case I can recall where I actually preferred the sound of the CD to the record.

Stan Ricker has done a wonderful job mastering this Lp! Musically it truly rewards repeated listening. Many of their musical influences can be heard and at times I feel John Lennon is being channeled. This should in no way be interpreted to mean that this music is any less Wilco's. A great slab of vinyl and the extra - included - Cd is a real bonus, especially for those who MUST do comparisons. I won't predjudice comparison with my thoughts however. Just enjoy!
